The High Beta Engineered flow conditioner is a proprietary-designed flow-conditioning device that is designed to minimize pressure loss while straightening flow in combustion air flow ducts with relatively few or almost no straight duct runs upstream and/or downstream. Eliminating cyclonic, turbulent, and reverse flow at the point of measurement, the High Beta optimizes flow conditions so that the accompanying VAP Pitots can obtain their maximum accuracy.
The High Beta consists of a flanged 304 stainless steel duct section that can be inserted into either round or rectangular ducts. A converging section effectively straightens the flow profile and accelerates air through its round measurement area. An array of VAP pitots is housed within each HBE that will provide an accurate differential pressure output for the highest degree of air flow measurement and control of your process. The High Beta is erosion resistant and can handle typical process temperatures up to 700oF. Additionally, the High Beta can be *NIST reference calibrated prior to installation. Typical *NIST calibrated total flow uncertainties can be as low as +/-0.50% over the calibrated range.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Below, you can find the manuals for the High Beta family of flow elements. The manuals have been divided into the Mechanical Manual for the element itself and the Electronics Manual for the use and installation of any transmitter that was purchased from Eastern Instruments.
Below are just a few of the many features and benefits of installing a High Beta Engineered flow element within your process. If you have an application that you would like to discuss, please Contact Us today.
The High Beta comes in a variety of adaptable designs that make it truly universal. The High Beta can be mounted within a flanged spool section for round ducts and with a mount plate that can be welded to the interior of existing duct work for rectangular and square duct work of any size.
The accuracy of the High Beta is typically within +/-0.5% and repeatability is within +/-0.1%, and that is achievable independently of the upstream and downstream straight runs.
ROUND DUCTS
Includes a flanged duct section for easy bolt in installation.
RECTANGULAR/SQUARE DUCTS
Includes a Rectangular Mount plate that is welded to the interior of existing duct work. The air flow elements themselves are internally manifolded and connected via through-wall fittings to the exterior of the duct.
The High Beta includes an integral array of VAP Pitots that measure the air flow passing through the flow element. The pitots are available in either the SA mode for clean air flow applications or in the PA mode for "dirty" air or particulate-laden applications.
The High Beta contains an array of integral flow straightening vanes that eliminate cyclonic, turbulent and reverse flow at the point of measurement.
The High Beta can be made of either Stainless Steel or Carbon Steel and the internal array of pitots are manufactured out of Anodized Aluminum, Stainless Steel or PVC.
Yields a pressure drop of less than 30% of the differential pressure generated across the flow element.
There are no active electronic components or moving parts that are installed within the air stream, thus eliminating maintenance costs and ensuring reliability and ease of use for many years.
VAP Pitot arrays provide multiple DP sensing ports along multiple sensing probes in order to offer full coverage, or full traversal, of any duct.
HBE APPLICATIONS - POWER
Since 1984 Eastern Instruments has been active in the Power Generating sector to simplify and to optimize the combustion phase of power production. We have many successful installations in a range of plants from coal-fired power plants to waste-to-energy plants that are flourishing in our new green energy climate. Below are just a few of the many applications for the High Beta Engineered. With a variety of applications in the power industry including a variety of combustion installations, such as primary air flow, secondary air flow, and over-fired air flow measurement, the High Beta is a perfect solution for the irregular duct work often found in power plants. If you have an application that you would like to discuss, please Contact Us today.

HBE INSTALLATION IN PRIMARY AND TEMPERING DUCTS
The High Beta Engineered (HBE) can be used for a variety of applications in order to accurately measure the air in Primary Air Ducts, Secondary Air Ducts and Tempering Air Ducts. When used in multiple locations simultaneously, proper control of the air can be monitored and can be properly ratio-ed with the particular burner fuel being used to maximize the efficiency of the burner. In this instance, Primary Air and Tempering Air are being measured simultaneously.
Special application specific versions of the High Beta have also been designed. One such application specific design is the Oval Beta designed for use in the very wide but short duct work found in Cyclone Burners in Coal Fired Power Plants. A damper can be installed prior to the Oval High Beta installation and, in conjunction with the flow signal from the High Beta, the air flow entering the Cyclone Burner can be managed and controlled.
Below, you will find a variety of product literature including product catalogs, single page cut sheets and various application guides that can assist in selecting the correct flow element for your project. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us as well.

THE HIGH BETA AND THE POWER INDUSTRY
The trend to improve efficiency in today's power plant environment drives the need for effective boiler trim controls which, in turn, requires accurate combustion air flow measurement. Air flow measurement that is not repeatable, accurate, or representative of mass flow can destabilize the airflow control loop. Air flow is at its most accurate when the flow being measured has no turbulent, reverse, or cyclonic flow patterns and is evenly profiled across the duct at the measurement point. Typically, a flow conditioner, such as the High Beta from Eastern Instruments, is required to alleviate these types of flow disturbances.
The High Beta Engineered (HBE) flow conditioner is ideal for profiling even the most turbulent flows and is perfect for applications where ducts are not uniform or are irregular in size and shape, such as those seen in the duct work of power plants measuring Primary Air, Secondary Air, Over-fired Air or Tempering Air among other applications.
The combustion process can be understood as a mass-based relationship in which optimization occurs through the stoichiometric balance between the mass of air and the mass of fuel or feed stock being combusted. Whether the fuel is coal or a biomass feed stock such as wood chips, construction debris, or even soybeans or sugar cane, the proper fuel-to-air ratio is critical to increasing the efficiency of the burners and maintaining an optimal temperature for the boilers.
SUPERIOR PLUG RESISTANCE FOR "DIRTY" AIR
In many cases, pitot tubes have one port facing into the air stream (high), and one port at 90o to the air stream (low). The differential pressure between the HIGH and LOW ports represents the velocity. Situated in this way, however, the "high" port is vulnerable to plugging from airborne particulate including fly ash or debris caused during the combustion process.
The HBE is equipped with VAP pitots which place the HIGH port in-line with airflow, which means it has no impact ports and is thus resistant to the plugging issues associated with standard pitots.
